Over the last few years we have worked with the FDA and The Film Space to develop three MOOCs for the Future Learn platform. MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) offer students from all over the world the opportunity to learn new skills online - free of charge. The courses have proved incredibly popular with nearly 30’000 having enrolled in these global classrooms.
The first course we produced with the FDA and The Film Space looks at how our favourite films make it to our local cinema or television screen through the film distribution process. It features extensive interviews with industry professionals, including Lord David Puttman (who introduces the learners to each weeks content). The course also includes several film based tasks developed by ourselves.
This MOOC explores what genre means in film and how it shapes both the narrative and the audiences response to the story on screen. Using interviews, bespoke interactive tasks and Padlet boards, learners can bring their own cinematic experiences into the discussion whilst being guided by experts in film studies.
In this five week course, students look at the different tools we use to understand film - how we understand what is happening on the screen, how it has been constructed by the filmmakers and how stories are interpreted by the audiences. As with the previous two MOOCs this course is filled with interviews, film extracts and lots of engaging interactivity.
